Remember when “Mother’s Day” at church was a really BIG deal—-everybody came, even the sinners , to celebrate Mothers. I love those memories—the big hats, white gloves, fancy dresses, and flowers.
Everybody wore flowers, color depending on the mortality of mom, red for alive, white for deceased. I always thought, still do, that a better color would be “black” for deceased, “white” for alive.
Mom’s with most children present got a prize. I guess that was the reason they birthed 14 children, to get the Mother’s Day “Most Children Present” award. Why else? Some planned children’s births to secure the “Youngest Mother” award. While having 14 children is out of style, the planned birth seems to be more in style.
In my youth, Mom had to prepare her own Mother’s Day meal, but boys and husbands washed dishes to show support. Anyway, one thing has not changed, Moms are worthy of all the honor given to them. So, Mom, today is your day, tomorrow watch out! Have a great Mother’s Day.
